The Telescent LIGHTSTITCH Automated Cross-Connect System increases provisioning speed, availability and efficiency by eliminating the need for manual reconfiguration and tracking of fiber optic cable connections.

The LIGHTSTITCH is based on new innovations in fiber optic switching algorithms and systems that solve a fundamental problem previously thought to be impossible: how to reconfigure thousands of fiber optic cross-connections in an automated way without entanglement or long term degradation. This fundamental Telescent advance was reported in the Journal of Lightwave Technology and is the subject of over 17 pending and awarded patents.

The LIGHTSTITCH weaves internal fiber cross-connections analogous to a loom, managing complex and arbitrary patterns of connections through software so that new, arbitrary patterns of connections can be woven in the switching fabric. The reconfiguration of any fiber cross-connection has no impact on the transmission through other cross-connections.

This system incorporates unique elastic fiber optic circuits, based on our retractable fiber cable cassettes, that maintain slightly tensioned internal optical fiber connections. We utilize machine vision alignment and take advantage of the compliant mating characteristics of standard LC connectors to achieve high performance latching connections.

This design ensures a zero-loss optical core with unprecedented insertion loss repeatibility, scalability to over 1000 cross-connections, and a modular design in which single mode and multimode cross-connections can be added or removed as needed. Future add-on modules, including the SURETRACE RFID overlay network and SUREDETECT distributed optical monitor will be available as enhancements to today’s LIGHTSTITCH system.
