The LIGHTSTITCH Automated Fiber Optic Cross-Connect system automates the management of all interconnections within fiber optic networks.  Key elements include:

  • LIGHTSTITCH Automated Fiber Optic Cross-Connect
  • SURETRACE RFID Overlay Network
  • AUTOLINK Layer-0 Network Automation Software Tools
  • SUREDETECT Optical Monitoring Subsystem Based on Microwire Detectors

Telescent’s control and monitor elements interface directly through the LIGHTSTITCH to a Network Management Software system (NMS).

In a typical application of the LIGHTSTITCH, fiber optic patchcords from all network elements, as well as outside plant cables, are connected to the input and output ports of the automated cross-connect. The NMS instructs a distributed network of LIGHTSTITCH cross-connects to automatically configure, provision and even validate physical connections through a combination of switching and RFID discovery.  The NMS includes management software tools linked to a database representing physical connections and is able to control, monitor and map all connections within the facility without manual intervention.

  • This ability to control (via LIGHTSTITCH), monitor (via SUREDETECT) and map (via SURETRACE) the physical layer enables Layer-0 virtualization.
  • The connectivity and signal levels of each fiber optic interconnection are discoverable in a truly automatic fashion.
  • Passive interconnections become software-managed elements.
  • Any change in optical and physical connectivity is automatically detected and reported back to the NMS.
  • The management of inventory and configuration records for millions of physical connections within the network are then automated and accurately recorded by software driven processes.
